Glasgow rail chaos as 76 trains cancelled today while ScotRail staff isolate due to covid

Rail operator ScotRail has cancelled over 100 train services today (December 19) due to staffing issues caused by the new omicron covid variant.

The rapid spread of covid due to the new strain has resulted in an increase in the number of rail staff self-isolating, with the knock-on effect of train cancellations across Glasgow and Scotland.

A total of 111 trains are listed as cancelled on their website over the course of the day, 76 of which involve trains due to call or pass through stations in the Glasgow area.

ScotRail took to Twitter to apologise for the disruption, tweeting: "ScotRail continues to be affected by the rapid spread of coronavirus and the Omicron variant, which is causing cancellation of services, mainly across central Scotland. Customers should continue to check their journeys before travelling on our app or website.

"We’d like to say sorry to our customers who are being inconvenienced as a result of an increase in the number of our staff self-isolating due to Covid-19. We'll keep you updated."

18 other trains - 17 of which involve Glasgow-bound services - will also not operate at all planned stations either today, with ScotRail's website noting that this is due to "a member of on-train staff being taken ill".
