Glasgow Radisson Blu Hotel rooftop expansion plans given green light by council

Ambitious plans for a rooftop extension at the Radisson Blue hotel have been given the green light by Glasgow City Council.

As we reported in March of this year, the proposals include for three extra storeys of accommodation at the landmark Argyle Street hotel, increasing the number of guest rooms from 247 to a total of 388.

The application proposes a refurbishment of all rooms and an increase to the number of lifts, as well as the extension of the existing hotel bar/restaurant area into an existing adjacent ground floor function room.

Improvement works to the existing ground floor frontages were put forward under a separate planning application.

The planning documents state the rooftop extension plans "seek to respond" to the increase in demand of hotel accommodation in Glasgow, and feature a design which is "appropriate and sensitive" to other buildings in the vicinity of the hotel.

Glasgow City Council have now granted permission for the move subject to certain conditions.

The planning statement reads: "The demand for additional hotel accommodation in Glasgow exists and these proposals seek to respond and provide to help meet that demand.

"The scale and design of the proposals have been very carefully developed to deliver on objectives and take due account of surrounding building context and uses, and the proposals respond positively to these considerations and provide for a high-quality solution which will enhance the existing building, and which is appropriate and sensitive to surrounding buildings."
