Glasgow Queen Street evacuation - passenger safety 'not compromised' in train smoke incident

Glasgow Queen Street had to be evacuated earlier this morning after smoke was seen pouring from a train.

Passengers were urgently ushered out of the station, amid fears and reports a fire had taken hold of one of the carriages.

The incident has led to major disruption on Queen Street rail services.

ScotRail have since released a statement on Twitter which confirms an 'engine fault' was the cause of the smoke, setting off the fire alarm within the station.

The rail operator also added that at no point was passenger safety compromised, either on the train, or in the station.

ScotRail says: "The disruption was caused when one of our trains experienced an engine fault as it prepared to leave Queen Street. The fault resulted in smoke coming from the engine, which set off the fire alarm at Queen Street. While there was smoke, at no point was there a fire.

"There were no customers on the train at the time. At no point was safety compromised, either on the train or at the station. The train has now returned to the depot for further examination."

Glasgow Live have contacted the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service for comment, with fire crews seen at the incident.
