Glasgow Queen Elizabeth University Hospital blaze after patient deliberately starts fire

Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital was on fire this morning after a patient deliberately started a blaze.

Patients from Ward 6C were moved out as five fire engines turned up to fight the flames.

The blaze broke out at the hospital on Govan Road in the city just after 6.30am.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "“SFRS was alerted at 6.29pm on Tuesday, June 18 to reports of a fire within Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“Operations Control mobilised five fire engines on ward 6c where crews extinguished a small fire.

“There were no casualties."

An NHS Spokesperson told Glasgow Live that the fire was deliberately started by a patient in the hospital.

They said: "Thanks to the quick reaction of our staff a fire started deliberately by a patient in their room at the QEUH was quickly extinguished.

"The fire service was called to ensure the area was safe but as a precautionary measure we have temporarily moved five patients while our estates staff assess the damage.  We expect these patients to be returned later today."
