Glasgow pub The Clutha to 'feed local weans' rather than 'sitting on their bums' during quiet January

Glasgow pub The Clutha has come up with a fantastic plan to keep busy amid a quiet January period - by cooking thousands of pizzas to feed as many local 'weans' as they possibly can.

The post-festive period and new restrictions prompted by the omicron covid variant mean that like everywhere in the city, the Stockwell Street boozer is not seeing as many people through the door as usual.

And rather than 'standing about', bar and kitchen staff are going to be doing their bit to help the community, with the pizzas going to local charities, nurseries and other groups they are involved with - such as the SWAMP project in Pollok.

Alan Crossan, Owner of the Clutha Bar and founder of the Clutha Trust charity, told Glasgow Live: "It's a matter of keeping the guys busy in the pub and in turn helping through January. We are really not busy at all right now. So we are just doing nothing.

"We'll make the pizzas and distribute them and kids and their families can get a pizza and take them home with them."

He took to Facebook to announce the charitable move by the pub, writing: "Tough times in the pub industry just now. Like most others the Clutha is also suffering. Our bar staff and chefs don’t like standing about – its boring. And it looks like this will last until at least the end of January.

"So, rather than sit on our bums for the next few weeks we have decided to feed as may local weans as we can. We are making thousands of the famous Clutha pizzas and supplying nurseries, charities and groups in places like the Gorbals, Pollok, Govanhill and beyond.

"How can you help us help our local community? Simple, come in and buy a pint or try one our specials – Steak Pie and a Pint for £10 or even a pizza - if there is any left. Support your local pub, we need you."

A brilliant idea.
