Glasgow property: Inside the Shetland cottage cheaper than a one bed city flat

A charming three-bedroom cottage has gone up for sale in Shetland for cheaper than a one-bedroom Glasgow flat.

For fans of the thrilling BBC Scotland series Shetland who want to escape the hustle and bustle of Glasgow, the property could prove very tempting.

The detached house is in Aywick on the East side of Yell. Yell is the second largest island in Shetland after the Mainland, and has a population of around 1,000 people.

Available for offers over £49,995, the property is considerably less expensive than a one-bedroom flat in the city. Properties in Glasgow usually start at well over £50,000 according to Rightmove.

However, the low price is partly due to the amount of "renovation and modernisation". As is, the property is "considered unacceptable for mortgage purposes".

The listing states: "Detached three-bedroom house situated in Aywick on the East side of Yell. ‘Rocklea Cottage’ benefits from electric storage heating and double-glazed windows however the property requires renovation and modernisation which is reflected in the price."

Amenities include the Aywick shop "just next door", with Mid Yell a "short drive" away. Mid Yell has a primary and a secondary school, a leisure centre and swimming pool, as well as a health centre, a dental surgery, a pier and a boating club.

The listing continues: "Mainland Shetland is easily accessible with a regular ro-ro ferry service which runs from Ulsta at the South of Yell to Toft on the mainlaned which is 27 miles from Lerwick."

Looking inside the property, the ground floor contains an entrance porch, a kitchen, a living room, a hallway, a bathroom, a bedroom and a utility area. The retro kitchen features wood panelling, while the bathroom comes with a generously sized bathtub.
