Glasgow Primark stores reopen as hundreds of shoppers queue early to get inside

Primark stores across the country have opened for the first time in months as Scotland emerged from lockdown.

It's the first time shoppers have been able to purchase their favourite Primark goodies since December, with hundreds taking advantage of the early opening.

In Glasgow, people could be seen lining Argyle Street in the early hours to try and get inside Primark first. Braehead Shopping Centre was also full by 9am with dozens of keen shoppers queuing up outside the mall.

Primark bosses announced last week that they would be opening stores early and extending their hours to reduce queues, spread demand and give customers ample time to shop safely.

Argyle Street will be open 7am until 8pm, while Sauchiehall Street will be operating between 7.30am and 7pm Monday-Wednesday and 8am to 8pm on Thursday. Braehead's store will be open from 7am to 9pm on Monday, before moving to 8am to 9pm the rest of the week.

Social distancing will be in place in all Primark shops, as well as limits on the number of customers allowed in and compulsory face coverings.

Non-essential shops opened for the first time since Christmas today as Scotland moved into Level 3.

It means gyms, swimming pools, libraries and museums can reopen along with cafes, restaurants and beer gardens.

Hospitality will need to close at 8pm indoors, with alcohol only allowed to be served outside.

People will be able to meet others for a meal or drink, with up to six people from two households allowed to socialise indoors in a public place such as a cafe or restaurant.

Speaking to BBC's Good Morning Scotland, Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith was asked 'what goes through his mind' when he sees pictures of crowds queueing up to get into shops today.

He said: "The first thing that goes through my mind is that this is a moment that people have waited for, for a long long time... it's something that's been building up across the population for many months now.

"People have looked to try to get back to some sort of normality as much as possible so today represents a huge step forward for many many people in relation to that so I understand the excitement.

"Of course, It would be wrong of me not to say that I get uneasy when I hear that because as soon as you get crowds of people coming together there is always that risk, but we are in a good place.

"The rate of infections that we have across Scotland is the best that we have seen since the early part of September last year, things are moving in the right direction."
