Glasgow police warn of 'pry attacks' against elderly as they hand out anti-burglary device

Glasgow police officers are to hand out gadgets to vulnerable residents to stop burglars breaking into homes after winning council allocated funding.

Officers aim to give people the ‘sash window jammers’ when carrying out home security visits.

It is understood the equipment stops burglars opening doors or windows if they break through a lock.

The council's North East Area Partnership gave Police Scotland £299 to hand out 52 of the anti-burglary devices at a meeting on Friday. It is understood they are to be given out in all 23 council wards in the city with the police seeking funding from every partnership.

A council official said: “There is a current trend of pry attacks against the most elderly and at risk in the community. This would allow police to provide proactive and reactive support on home security visits. It will provide citizens with peace of mind if they are provided with a sash window jammer.”

Partnership chair councillor Ruairi Kelly, SNP, said he would like the police to report back at the next meeting how they are going to identity people who would receive the items.

The council officer said the equipment would go to residents who expressed concern about housebreaking or if a home had already been targeted.

Councillor Kelly said the partnership could ask the police to update on the roll-out of the scheme.

Welcoming the move, Councillor Maureen Burke said: “It is for the safety of elderly people.” Police are seeking the same amount of funding from all 23 council area partnerships.

The area partnership handed out funding to a variety of groups at the meeting on Friday. It has been allocated £88,194 for this financial year.
