Glasgow police uncover massive cannabis cultivation in the making in the Gorbals

An industrial-sized cannabis cultivation in the making has been discovered at commercial premises in the Gorbals area.

Police officers acting under warrant raided the premises on Moffat Street on August 19 and recovered 600 cannabis plants, with an estimated street value of £120,000. It's believed the cultivation was in its early stages with growing rooms still being prepared inside.

Over 600 unused bags of soil worth £10,000 were also recovered that have now been redistributed for use in school and community gardens and allotments across the city.

Inspector Cennydd Smith, Gorbals Police Station, said: “Industrial-sized cannabis cultivations are used by criminal gangs who take advantage of some of the most vulnerable people in our society and use the money from these cultivations to fund other criminal activities. Being able to disrupt this activity at its early stages is an excellent result and being able to bring some added benefits to community groups across Glasgow is a real bonus”

Sgt Gary Bone, Community Policing Team, Gorbals Police Station, said the premises had the potential to be 'one of the largest cultivations he had ever seen'.

Sgt Bone added: "There were other growing rooms being prepared inside that would have significantly increased its capacity. This early discovery has seriously impacted on the group’s ability to operate.

“It was information from the community that led us to this discovery. It is vital that we work together with the local community to tackle the supply and distribution of drugs and we would urge anyone with information about drug crime in the area to contact police via 101 or anonymously to Crimestoppers online or by calling 0800 555 111.

"Enquiries are ongoing with regard to those responsible for the cultivation."
