Glasgow police receive over 6,500 stolen bike reports in past five years

Over 6,000 bikes were registered as stolen in Glasgow in the past five years, according to newly released data by Police Scotland.

A total of 6,522 cycle thefts that were reported to police occurred in the city since 2015, 6112 of which still remain unsolved to date.

The shock figures were revealed in a newly published BBC News Scotland article, which also reported that the number of bikes stolen in Scotland (and which were reported to police) rose by nearly 20% during lockdown.

A breakdown of the thefts in Glasgow indicates that the city has seen around 1,600 bike thefts per year since 2016, equating to 108 every month.

Seven of the top 20 council wards that encountered the most bike thefts reported to police in the past five years in Scotland were in Glasgow, with the Anderston/City/Yorkhill area seeing the most thefts in the country with 1,779 - 131 of which were solved.

Joining the ward in the top seven were Hillhead, Southside Central, Govan, Partick East/Kelvindale, Calton and Pollokshields.

Of the 23 Glasgow wards in total, the ward which saw the lowest number of bike thefts reported to police was Linn, with 31 in the past five years - two of which were solved.

The data comes after we reported back in January how thieves in Glasgow were cutting through metal railings to steal bikes from tenement closes.

The tactic, which saw two bikes stolen from closes in Partick in a numbeer of days, prompted Glasgow North West Police to issue a warning to tenement dwellers to keep their closes secure and if possible keep their bikes in their flats.
