Glasgow police officers help deliver baby in back of car in frantic roadside birth

A pair of 'quick-thinking' Glasgow police officers have been hailed as 'outstanding' after delivering a baby in the back of a car.

PC Stevie Fergus and PC Guy Rawson were on a routine patrol in Maxwell Road in Pollokshields when they spotted a 'distressed' man flagging them down.

The man's wife had gone into labour in the back of their car. The officers sprung into action and helped deliver the baby boy at the scene.

PC Fergus ensured the newborn's airways were clear and rubbed his back until he started crying. Ambulance crews appeared soon after and rushed mother and baby to hospital.

Greater Glasgow Police Division confirmed that both mother and baby are 'doing well'. Locals took to social media in their droves to praise the coppers for their efforts and congratulate the couple on the safe arrival of their bundle of joy.

One wrote: Congratulations to the new parents on the arrival of their new baby. A massive well done to the police officers." Another commented: Congratulations to the proud parents on the birth of your beautiful baby boy, amazing work by both police officers. Well done."

A third posted: Well done gents, never a dull moment." Another wrote: "Well done to those officers. It must have been a relief to the anxious parents, it's not just locking up the baddies." And a fifth commented: "Absolutely outstanding, well done to these wonderful police officers."

Local police chiefs stressed that bobbies on the beat 'never know what can be around the corner'.

A force spokesperson said: Working for Police Scotland can be exciting and dynamic, we never really know what can be around the corner or what might be coming next. Two police officers from Glasgow know just how true that can be when they stopped to assist a member of the public and ended up delivering a baby boy.
