Glasgow picture goes viral as subject reunites with photographer 40 years later

A photographer has tracked down a woman he candidly snapped in the west end some 40 years ago thanks to social media.

Jos Treen, 66, captured the people and streets of Glasgow in 1978 after receiving a camera for his 21st birthday.

But the photographs he took while walking through the streets in the north of the city, from Possil through Maryhill, down Byres Road and into Partick, were largely forgotten for almost 40 decades.

After retiring from the chemical industry in 2017 he decided it was time to dust off the snaps from their hiding place in the attic and share them with the world.

He then thought it would be fun to share the photographs on Twitter and see if could reconnect with anyone he snapped while wandering the streets of Glasgow some 40 years ago.

Amazingly, he has managed to find his subject Angela Mackinnon yesterday thanks to the power of social media.

His long-lost subject Angela Mackinnon recognised herself after he published a picture on Twitter of her skipping along the streets of the west end.

He tweeted: “The power of Twitter. After 40 years The wee girl in my picture now has a name. Angela Mackinnon @AngieDee73 recognised herself in Chancellor St, Partick.”

The striking pictures show what the city was like in the 70s, capturing the tenement life of families at the time.

And Jos’s collection, which he continues to share on Twitter, have brought back memories for many Glaswegians.

The snapshots show children out in the streets with neighbours and family, playing games out in traffic-free streets.

While many of these faces are painted with smiles, the reality of a poverty stricken Glasgow can also be felt, as a housing crisis gripped the nation.

Now based in Manchester, Jos continues to develop and print his own work, and has even published a book of his snapshots of Glasgow from the 1970s.

Jos Treen — Glasgow 1978 is available to buy on Cafe Royal Books for £6.50.
