Glasgow parking spaces could be turned into outdoor seating for pubs and restaurants

Glasgow could soon see 'parklets' popping up around the city as businesses look to expand their premises outside.

Parklets allow businesses without the benefit of widened footpaths to take over parking spaces outside their premises instead.

The non-permanent spaces allow customers to eat and drink outside without taking up the pavement and making the streets more accessibile.

Business looking can apply for road occupation and street café permits from Glasgow City Council with each application looked at on a case by case basis.

Glasgow welcomed its first 'parklet' back in 2015 when Ice Cream Architecture in collaboration with the Centre for Contemporary Arts built a roadside installation.

The wooden pavilion was created from reclaimed timber from the city's parks and offered the public a place to sit and enjoy some greenery on Sauchiehall Street.

A council spokesperson said: “It may be possible to allocate some of the additional outdoor space created as a consequence of temporarily widening footways through our Spaces for People programme, for queuing or outdoor seating.  Businesses in these locations can seek a café permit through City Services.

“Where premises are not situated in a street where general footway widening is taking place, businesses can still make an application for a road occupation and street café permit. Infrastructure solely for this purpose cannot however be funded through Spaces for People which is creating temporary infrastructure for walking, wheeling and cycling.

"Any application would be considered on a case by case basis and if safe to do so, a permit may be granted. In these circumstances, business owners would be required to provide, install and maintain the infrastructure required to meet the conditions of operation.”
