Glasgow park mystery as video shows purple water flowing through burn

This is the moment a burn running through one of Glasgow's biggest parks turns completely purple.

Shocked locals scrambled to the banks of the Tollcross Burn in Tollcross Park to watch on as the flowing water turned a bright violet shade on Friday.

Amazing video footage captured by a dog walker, shows the burn, in the east end of the city, turn a bright violet shade.

Locals speculated that the strange reaction might have been caused by a chemical spill.

The cause of the change of colour is yet to be identified.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) confirmed reports of the burn initially turning an 'inky black colour' on Wednesday night.

Reports of a 'purple hue' were then reported on Friday.

SEPA are still investigating the incident.

A SEPA spokeswoman told the Record: “Every day SEPA works to protect and enhance Scotland’s environment and takes all reports of pollution seriously.

“On Wednesday, August 19 SEPA received reports that water in Tollcross Burn was an inky black colour.

“Our officers are investigating and understand that the discolouration had ceased, until receiving reports of a purple hue in the same watercourse on Friday, August 21.

“SEPA is working to identify the source of the discolouration and is also liaising with Scottish Water, which is also investigating the matter.

“Anyone who is concerned about a potential pollution incident can report this via the SEPA website."

The Daily Record contacted Glasgow City Council for comment.
