Glasgow Orange Walk: up to 1,000 marchers to walk past church where priest was spat at

Up to 1,000 people will march by a Glasgow church where a priest was spat at as part of a new Orange Walk summer parade.

The County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow has informed the council that about 950 members of the Orange Order will walk past St Alphonsus in the east end on June 8.

It is estimated that marchers will reach the church - outside which Canon Tom White was assaulted last July - after 12pm, while parishioners gather for Sunday mass held by Canon White.

The proposed route for the event would start in Corn Street at 11am and take in Garscube Road, St George's Road and Sauchiehall Street.

The procession would then go onto West George Street and onto George Square, where a wreath would be laid.

The parade would then continue down George Street,  through the Gallowgate onto London Road, then it would go past St Alphonsus , before ending at Glasgow Green.

A spokesperson for Glasgow City Council told the Evening Times:  “We are still in the early stages of handling this notification and will consult with our colleagues at Police Scotland in due course.”
