Glasgow Orange march: Police warn of road closures and delays ahead of processions

Police have warned drivers to expect delays across the city today as thousands of people take part in Orange marches.

It's estimated some 13,225 participants will be involved in at least 30 walks today (Saturday, September 18) which officers say will see a number of roads closed.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: "Please be advised that due to the processions in Glasgow today we are anticipating disruption to traffic as a number of roads will be closed.

"Please plan your journey ahead of time."

The majority of the marches will be finishing at Glasgow Green where there will be a celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne, first passing through Duke Street, Saltmarket, and High Street. A number will also be leaving from the park.

George Square and surrounding streets, including St Vincent Street and Hope Street, are anticipated to see large crowds.

Kelvingrove Park will also be used as a starting point with participants heading down Kelvingrove Street, Argyle Street and St Vincent Street and towards the city centre before proceeding to Glasgow Green.

The County Grand Orange Lodge of Glasgow South Group, which will begin at Pacific Quay, expects 1,850 members alone.

Meanwhile, the North Group, beginning at Garscube Road, expects 1,010 and the West Group, assembling at Kelvingrove Park, expects 650.

Officers from Police Scotland will be stationed throughout the parades.

Campaigners from Call It Out, protesting "against anti-Irish racism and anti-Catholic bigotry", will be holding "peaceful" demonstrations including one outside Blessed John Duns Scotus RC Church, the Gorbals, at 2pm.

A full list of routes can be found on the Glasgow City Council website.
