Glasgow optician launches eye tests for dogs

A Glasgow optician has unveiled a new service - providing free eye tests for four-legged members of the family.

Black & Lizars has teamed up with a local vet Richard Black, of Rouken Glen Veterinary Surgery, after he noticed an alarming number of dogs running into chairs, tables and walls.

Richard told Glasgow Live : “In the last few months, I’ve been stunned by the number of dogs I’ve treated after collisions with household items. This seems to be more prevalent amongst dogs as they get older.

“Eye health in dogs is extremely important and it’s short-sighted of owners to ignore symptoms. I’m glad Black & Lizars has stepped up to help our canine friends out while other optometrists seem to have closed their eyes to this very serious problem.”

The eye tests launch today at Black & Lizars practices across Scotland, and they’re free - but any extras, such as eyewear, will have to be paid for.

Director Allan Beckett added: “Dogs are part of the family, so why shouldn’t they get the same care, attention and experience the rest of our patients receive?

“Every dog, especially those aged over six years old, should have a regular eye check. The Black & Lizars enhanced eye exam is the gold standard of eye care and we look forward to welcoming dogs to our practices.

“We expect to see some dapper dachshunds and chic chihuahuas on the streets come summer wearing the latest frames.

“We will invest in staff training and tailored optical technology to ensure all dogs receive the highest standard of clinical care.  No matter how complex, our optometrists and qualified clinical staff have the skills to tailor to the individual needs of each and every dog.”
