Glasgow optician brings Japanese lens tech to UK following £200,000 investment

A Glasgow optician has introduced a new type of lens to the UK market as part of its growth plans for the next two years.

Mika & Me will be the first optician in the UK to offer Japanese aspheric lenses as standard. The lenses have become popular in Asia because they are thinner, flatter and lighter.

The company will digitally fit the lenses, so that customers can get brand new glasses in under an hour.

It has opened a first store on Park Road, in Glasgow’s West End, following a £200,000 investment that will create 10 jobs.

Plans are in place to create a further 20 jobs with the opening of another two shops by the end of 2021.

Mika & Me is to open a total of 10 stores during the next two years, targeting new sites throughout the UK.

Barry Hutcheon, founder at Mika & Me, said: “It is our belief that Mika & Me will revolutionise the approach to purchasing glasses here in Britain.

“We firmly believe that Japanese aesthetic lenses, which allow a rapid turnaround in the process of selecting, fitting and walking out of a store with new glasses, will take off."

The company is planning to launch its own range of eyewear later this year.
