Glasgow one of top UK cities for key worker jobs, new data reveals

Glasgow has some of the highest numbers of key workers in the UK, according to annual population data released by the Office of National Statistics.

It revealed that one in three people in Glasgow are in roles that have been categorised as key workers by the UK Government during the coronavirus pandemic, with jobs such as health and care workers, delivery drivers, and postal workers.

The region has the third highest number of key workers in the UK, behind North of Tyne combined authority and Tees Valley combined authority.

Glasgow topped the list for key worker jobs in the transport category, with employees making up 2.2% of the overall population.

A study by money.co.uk also found that Google searches for key worker job roles rose by 67% during the UK’s lockdown period.

The biggest increase in searches were for delivery drivers (+475%), postal workers (+371%) and are care workers (+144%).
