Glasgow one of the best cities for wearing masks on public transport in the UK

Glasgow is one of the best cities in the UK for wearing masks and face coverings on public transport, a new study has found.

86 per cent of people in Glasgow wear a face covering when on public transport. The data also revealed that over 1 in 4 British people do not wear a mask when travelling on public transport.

The figures in Glasgow are nearly twice as high as that of Manchester, with residents there some of the least likely to wear a mask on public transport - with only 46 per cent saying they always wear a mask on trains, buses and the tube.

83 per cent of people wear face coverings on public transport in Edinburgh.

The study, conducted by Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, found that 28 per cent of British people that have travelled on public transport in the last six months refused to wear a face mask, going against government guidelines to cover up when on the move.

It also found that 90 per cent of Scots wear masks compared to 77 per cent in England.

Unlike in other UK regions, no-one in Scotland, or Northern Ireland, said they didn’t believe masks helped in the fight against Covid-19.

Keith Hawes, Director at  Nationwide Vehicle Contracts, said: “With new restrictions being put in place regularly, government advice suggests we limit our use of public transport unless it’s absolutely essential. We’re also told to try and avoid peak times, only travelling when transport is quiet to allow for social distancing.

"The on-the-spot fine for not wearing a mask on public transport is £100 and this will double with each offense up to a hefty £3,200. If you have to travel to work or have other essential journeys  to take it seems driving may be the safest option at the moment."
