Voetbal Travel looked at factors such as the number of teams, the price and calibre of hotels, public transport options, and stadium reviews.

Only cities that have hosted over one team in their country's top division were included in the study.

According to the research, Rotterdam in the Netherlands is the best city in Europe for football fans, followed by Liverpool, London, and Manchester. Glasgow placed joint seventh with Athens, ahead of Edinburgh at nine.

While the two Scottish cities had an equal score for hotel reviews at 7.5, Glasgow was found to have better value hotels and had a superior average stadium review score.

While Edinburgh was awarded a higher score for travel links, Glasgow still had a higher overall score of 7.5 — beating the capital's score of 7.3.
