Glasgow north east and Lanarkshire coronavirus clusters - what we know so far

The number of cases in a coronavirus cluster in the north east of Glasgow has risen to 14 and these are linked to more cases in Lanarkshire, the NHS has confirmed.

Last week, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed that an initial eight positive cases were linked to the outbreak, with several of those affected pupils at Bannerman High in Baillieston.

None of those pupils linked to the initial outbreak had attended the school prior to when they were infected.

However on Sunday, it was announced that a pupil at Bannerman High School has tested positive for coronavirus after attending classes last week.

While there is no indication this further infection occurred in the school, the pupil, who the NHS say "is not causing clinical concern", did attend classes on Thursday, August 13.

They are now self-isolating at home alone with immediate family.

Meanwhile, a school pupil at Caldervale High School in Airdrie became the eighth person linked to a cluster in North Lanarkshire to test positive for the virus.

The local health board has confirmed a total of 14 positive cases in the Glasgow north east cluster, identified through Test and Protect - and a link between those Glasgow cases and more in Lanarkshire has been established.

NHSGGC’s Dr Iain Kennedy said:  “We can confirm there are links between this cluster and cases within Lanarkshire Health Board. We work closely on cross-Board issues on a regular basis, including the current clusters, where investigations are ongoing.

“There is currently no evidence of transmission in the schools. There is evidence that mixing socially, particularly around social gatherings in houses, without maintaining physical distancing measures can transmit the virus and is a factor in these investigation.”

Indoor social gatherings have also been blamed for a coronavirus outbreak in Lanarkshire.

NHS Lanarkshire and North Lanarkshire Council have said that there is no evidence to suggest that there is transmission in the school and the risk to the wider school community has been assessed as low.

NHS Lanarkshire is currently undertaking a community-wide investigation which includes confirmation of three pupils from St Ambrose High School in Coatbridge and one pupil at St Andrew’s High School in Coatbridge testing positive for Covid-19 along with three other linked cases who are not pupils or staff at the schools.

At yesterday's daily briefing First Minister Nicola Sturgeon addressed the ongoing ‘community clusters’.

She said: “More details on these is being provided as it becomes available.

“These clusters obviously show the virus is still out there and it continues to pose a very serious risk.”
