Glasgow named UK's fly-tipping capital with over 16,000 incidents reported this year

Glasgow has been named the UK's fly-tipping capital with more than 16,000 incidents recorded so far this year.

The city has seen a steady increase in incidents of illegal dumping over the past five years, with the number of incidents increasing by 47 per cent between 2014 and 2019.

The figures could reach an all time high this year, with 4,736 incidents recorded between January 1 and March 31 alone.

From the start of the year until October 15, the local authority has been contacted about 16,017 incidents of items being dumped in the city.

A Freedom of Information request comparing all of the UK's local councils, found that Glasgow City Council had to contend with the highest amount of fly-tipping in the country. They had to clear a whopping 115,986 incidents between 2014 and 2019.

Glasgow had over 1,000 more incidents than the council second worst hit by fly-tipping.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: ”Fly-tipping is blatant anti-social behaviour that undermines communities and places a significant drain on our resources, both in terms of collection and disposal.

“People have a basic responsibility to dispose of their waste appropriately at all times to protect our shared environment and the tax payer’s pound.

“We will always pursue any evidence against those responsible for fly-tipping and seek to take appropriate action against them.

“It should be noted that in Glasgow large, bulky items put out for collection can be mistaken for fly-tipping while other forms of littering can also be reported as fly-tipping.”
