Glasgow mystery as low flyby by fighter jets causes locals to 'dive for cover'

Residents living near Glasgow got the fright of their lives last night after two fighter jets flew over their houses at low altitude.

The unusual occurrence was reported to have happened around 5pm yesterday evening (January 20) in the skies above areas such as Cambuslang, Cumbernauld and Uddingston.

UK Defence Journal say the aircraft in question were US F-15 fighter jets, which passed over the Greater Glasgow area at just 1,000 feet off the ground - much lower than is routine - and at over 500mph per hour.

One person who saw the jets fly over their house in Uddingston tweeted: "Honestly thought there was a plane about to crash into the house last night when that roar started, ran outside and those fighter jets flew directly over my house in Uddingston, it was amazing, could feel the power of them on the ground. Awesome."

Others described the noise caused by the jets flying low above their house as "deafening" and sounding like a 'missile' had gone off, while someone else even reporting that a 'full house dived for cover' on hearing the jets overhead.

Meanwhile one joker wondered if Tom Cruise might have been filming a scene from Top Gunn, tweeting: "Tom Cruise filming his last scene in the old fighter jet above north Lanarkshire tonight.. wit a man."

UK Defence Journal report that the jets were conducting routine training, although no indication that the flights were to take place over the Central Belt is included in the Ministry of Defence's Operational low flying training timetable for this week.
