Glasgow mum in tears after youths hit lit firework off baby's pram

A mum has told of her horror after watching a firework spin out of control and land on a baby’s pram.

Elizabeth Gonzales-Hardman witnessed the terrifying incident while walking with a friend and her 18-month old daughter outside Langside Halls in Glasgow's southside.

She saw a group of teenage boys “looking quite dodgy” filming on their phones moments before the fireworks erupted.

One flare hit a woman’s pram carrying a baby, however fortunately the newborn was protected by a rain cover.

Elizabeth told our sister title Glasgow Live: "My friend and I were walking along the square in front of Langside Hall yesterday. We both had our buggies with our toddlers in them, and there were two other mums with younger children in prams.

"There were two or three boys loitering around, and it was only when my friend said "what are those boys up to?" that I looked up and saw them looking quite dodgy.

"They must have been about 14 or 15. The next minute they started running towards us, holding their phones out as if they were filming something.

"Mother's instinct kicked in and I moved towards my baby, but when I looked up, I just saw there was a firework going off, and it went straight onto the top of one of the other mothers' prams and kept spinning for ages.

"We started screaming for ages and the two boys ran off down Pollokshaws Road."

Elizabeth said the mother of the child was "in complete shock and tears".

She has urged anyone witnessing similar incidents to report them to police.

She said: "If she hadn’t had the rain cover on god knows what would have happened to the baby," said Elizabeth.

"I don’t know if people are reporting it enough - they just think it's just boys being naughty, but its really dangerous and traumatising.

"It's not an isolated incident as there are lots of stories of people terrorising others with fireworks in the area and it needs to be taken seriously."

Chief Inspector Neil McLeod has said that enquiries are ongoing and insists that incidents like this "will not be tolerated".

He said: "We received a report of a firework hitting a pram in Langside Road in Glasgow. The incident happened at around 2.30pm on Tuesday, 19 October. No-one was hurt has a result and enquiries are ongoing.

“The anti-social behaviour associated with the use of fireworks has the potential to cause serious injury and will not be tolerated. Anyone found to be involved in such offences will be brought to account for their actions.

“Anyone who has information about the incident is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting 0574 of 20 October, 2021."
