Glasgow mental health support group to hold winter meet-up at Kelvingrove Museum

A Glasgow mental health support group is to hold a winter get-together at Kelvingrove Museum in the coming weeks.

Mental Health Mates Glasgow was set up by Johnstone woman Nicola Downie last year, in a bid to get Glaswegians to open up and share their experiences surrounding their mental health.

The group is due to meet up at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum on December 1, offering Glaswegians "a place to walk and talk without fear of judgement."

Nicola told Glasgow Live ahead of the gathering: "Mental Health Mates Glasgow meet ups are relaxed, full of support and open to all. We go a short walk around Kelvingrove Park and then back to the museum for coffee and cake!"

The original Mental Health Mates group was founded in London by journalist Brian Gordon, and Nicola decided to expand it north of the border to help those suffering with mental health issues.

Nicola explained to Paisley Daily Express in January: "You just meet up, go for a walk, chat things out or go for coffee. It’s pretty low-key.

"When I was living in London I went down for my own support and I thought it was a brilliant idea, so I set up one of the branches up here in Glasgow, in March last year.

"Sometimes we talk about mental health and sometimes we just chat about what’s on the telly!

"I know a lot of the guys have found support through it and we’re just trying to reach out to the areas that need it."

To find out more about the meeting, which takes place on Sunday December 1 at the museum, at 12 noon, you can join the Mental Health Mates Glasgow Facebook group, HERE.
