Glasgow mature tree at Kelvingrove Museum had to be cut down before COP26

A mature tree, which disappeared from outside the Kelvingrove Museum, had to be removed says Glasgow City Council.

The tree was chopped down in the run-up to COP26 - causing some concern on social media.

The museum played host to US President Joe Biden, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, other world leaders and the Royals for a dinner during the climate summit.

Explaining what happened to the tree at the venue, a council spokesman said: “We checked the elm tree at the front of the open space at Kelvingrove Museum after receiving an enquiry about it from a local resident.

“We found that the tree was dead and removed it for safety reasons.

“The location has been passed to the Parks Development team so that it can be added to our list of sites which are being considered for inclusion in our replacement tree planting program.”

Ten trees for every person are to be planted in the Glasgow City Region over the next decade as part of efforts to fight climate change.

About 18 million trees are to be planted in that timeframe, which would increase woodland in the area from 17 per cent to 20 per cent.

Money to pay for the woods will come from the Scottish Forestry's grant schemes but also through “funding mechanisms that the Clyde Climate Forest can lever,” according to the council.

Another project will see “Wee Forests” the size of tennis courts created in the city centre.

Locations lined up for the tiny woods include Glasgow Green, Govan Road, Orkney Street, Maxwell Park, Castlebay Drive, Crookston Castle, Oakgrove Primary School and Rossendale Road.

The green spaces would have 600 native trees packed into them - and would be a magnet for 500 animal and plant species in the initial three years.

The first Wee Forest was planted in Easterhouse in February 2021.
