Glasgow map shows which parts of city could vanish by 2050 if sea levels continue to rise

A map that shows the impact of rising sea levels around the world has revealed the parts of Glasgow and the surrounding areas that could be lost in just 30 years.

The map, which has been put together by Climate Central - an independent climate change research organisation - shows the impact that rising water levels will have on our world by 2050.

Based on peer-reviewed research in a number of scientific journals, Climate Central's map shows which areas could be lost to rising sea levels if nothing is done to slow the potentially devastating change.

Their analysis of rising sea levels has found that large parts of the UK could well be lost to rising sea levels if cuts to pollution - one of the driving forces of climate change - are not made.

The map shows areas shaded in red, which are the areas that predicted to be underwater by 2050 - these are areas that are lower than the selected water level and which have an unobstructed path to the ocean.

The areas of Glasgow shaded red on the map include most areas next to the River Clyde such as Govan, the Broomielaw, Glasgow Harbour and even the Hydro and SEC Centre and area around the Riverside Museum, alongside parts of Whiteinch and Yoker.

And they are joined by Glasgow Airport and most of the surrounding area next to Black and White Cart Water as far as Linwood and Ferguslie Park as well as swathes of Braehead, Renfrew, Clydebank, Old Kilpatrick right down to Dumbarton.

Although it makes for stark and scary reading, the Climate Central map is actually designed to be used as a "screening tool" which could provide vital information about areas that require deeper investigation of risk.
