Glasgow man captures moment mystery animal's fin appears in waters in River Clyde

A Scot captured the moment a Bottlenose whale took a swim down the River Clyde in Glasgow.

James Newton captured the footage which showed a fin emerging from the depths of the city's iconic river.

The footage, shared on social media sparked a debate about what was splashing around in the water, reports Glasgow Live.

He wrote: "Just to add to 2020... the Clyde in the city is now shark infested..."

While basking sharks have been seen in the river, others thought it was perhaps a porpoise, a dolphin or even an otter.

Like with the sightings of the Loch Ness Monster there have been many theories put around.

It has now been confirmed the animal is believed to be a Bottlenose whale.

Scots took to social media to give their own suggestions.

Rebecca Turner wrote: "It'll be a basking shark, you get them in the Clyde quite often!"

Kirsty Taylor said: "Northern bottlenose whale. They've been hanging around so probably one of them."

Mark Gilespie wrote: "If you read the Scottish newspapers from the late 1930s there was a full blown panic about sharks in the Clyde. Front pages of every paper for weeks and shark hunts organised each weekend."

Stuart Carr added: "Whatever it is . It’s in feeding on the salmon that are returning to the Clyde tributaries to spawn .

"They won’t be hungry . There is tons now since the pollution has stopped."

Aquatic creatures in the Clyde nearly disrupted major Nato war games in Scotland.

A special Royal Navy team had to be called to move a pod of wales from around the Faslane submarine base at the start of the month ahead of Operation Joint Warrior.
