Glasgow 'machete attack' leaves homeless man injured

Police were called to the west end of Glasgow on Thursday after a homeless man was reportedly attacked by a gang with a machete.

Officers rushed to Great Western Road shortly before 2pm on May 12.

Eyewitnesses said a man was reportedly set upon by three others who were armed with a large blade.

The site of the alleged attack, at the bottom of the Hillhead Street steps, was cordoned off with crime scene tape.

One local businessman, who asked not to be named, said: "A homeless man was attacked by three men with a machete.

"I have a chair outside my premises and the man staggered down the street and sat on the chair.

"I tried to help him until the police arrived.

"There were big cuts visible on his neck and head.”

Police Scotland confirmed they were in attendance and that a man had been taken to hospital.

A spokesperson said: "Around 1.50pm, police received a report of a disturbance in Great Western Road, near the Spar shop.

"Emergency services attended and one man has been taken to hospital.

"Enquiries are continuing to establish what has happened."
