Glasgow Lives: William, 20, Kelvinside, photographer

"I wasn’t planning on taking photography as one of my subjects at school but all of the other creative classes I was interested in were full.

"Then I realised photography was really cool and I liked it immediately. I studied for a year at college but I've learned more from my own experience.

"I started taking pictures of my friends bands about three years ago, and that’s mainly the kind of work I do now. It’s not a full time job yet but I’m working towards that. I like doing portraits too and I want to get more into that definitely.

"I’m from Ayr and when I moved to Glasgow my first flat mate Lewis became my best friend and he got me into rock and grunge music. Lewis is the band Royal Bloom, and we agreed he would teach me how to play guitar, if I took pictures of the band, and I thought that was a fair trade off.

"It’s a brilliant energy when you photograph live music, it’s so cool, because you’re doing something you love that involves something you love - that’s a perfect combination for me.

"I hope to continue being a photographer, I want to go so much further with it. I do some work for BBC Social too, so I’m getting more experience.

My favourite pictures are the ones that are spontaneous and unexpected.  Sometimes you don’t expect something you’ve shot to turn out so well and when you see it afterwards and it’s a great picture, it’s really, really cool. Photography can really surprise you."
