Glasgow Lives: Mario, 22, West end, art and design student

"I’m French, I grew up on a tropical island, the French colony, Reunion Island, which is near Madagascar. It’s interesting growing up on a tropical island when you’re young, I loved diving and doing things out doors, but when you hit 15, there’s not much to do. The island is rather small and I got bored after a while. It is a very beautiful place and it’s great but I’m really glad I moved here because there’s just so much to do. I came here seven months ago, and I’m settling in well.

"I visited Scotland a few years ago and really loved it and figured I’d like to come and live here for the cultural experience. I really like it mainly because of the people here. I’ve never found any other country as friendly as Scotland. I actually love the weather too, I like the cold, I hated the heat at home, this is amazing for me, I’m living the dream right now. I never visited Glasgow when I was here before, I chose it because it’s a great student city.

"I’d like to stay here for a while but I’m concerned about the Brexit situation. I’m thinking I might like to go to Glasgow School of Art to further my studies. Whatever happens, I’ll figure something out, if I can’t stay here, I may go to Montreal.

"When I tell people that I chose to live here, rather than my tropical island home, they ask me, “Why the f**k would you?” But I think, Why wouldn’t I?

"Glasgow has everything, I’ve just taken up lots of new hobbies, ballet, figure skating, sewing and I’m going to start fencing, there’s so much to do here and it’s cheap. I think I’m over compensating now for all the time I used to have with nothing to do, now I don’t have a spare minute to relax, but it’s great. I love it here, it’s amazing."
