Glasgow Lives: Frankie, 35, Westend, co-founder and events specialist of Halo Arts

I started up Halo Events on my own in 2007 when I saw an opportunity to apply for a start up grant. My best friend Brendan was also running his own events company at the time called, Melting Pot Arts, and we merged the two companies together four years ago to create Halo Arts.

I’ve always been interested in putting on unique events. At the end of this month we are presenting our first ever drag themed Murder Mystery event called, Drag in the Dark, at the Westend Festiva, it’s the first ever drag queen murder mystery in Scotland  - a celebrity book launch takes a sinister twist as authors are suspects in the death of their publisher, I’m also playing the Detective. The idea is an entirely new concept that may well be a world first in terms of fusing the murder mystery concept with the ever growing fascination with the world of drag. We’re really excited about it. We’ve had a lot of success with Murder Mystery Events, we’ve done a number for the Westend Festival over the last few years.

I think being able to put something out there that’s entertaining on both a comedy level but that’s also a unique twist on a classic idea that’s also intellectually challenging is what makes us different in terms of our Events. The best thing about what we do is that we create new ways to put our twist on classic ideas, to put events on that have never happened in this way before in the city. Last last year we put on the first ever adventure trampoline dating event called, Super Hot Gay Guy. What makes our events unique is the way we construct how the event plays out, we use innovative ideas to make them special and original concepts.

There’s something really special about that for me on a creative level. It’s also challenging because when you attempt to deliver something that has never been done before there is a large element of risk involved but the creative rewards makes it all worthwhile. I thrive on the adrenaline of the risk too.

I think Glasgow has a lot to do with our success in putting quirky unique events on, because I think people here are very open to new ideas. I don’t think that’s the case in many cities. There’s a real open mindedness here especially for artistic projects, there’s a real open arms mentality about it in Glasgow, and that’s a big part of making it work.
