Glasgow litter kits to help residents to pick up rubbish from the street

Litter pickers and other equipment for residents to lift rubbish from streets is now more easily available in Glasgow, a meeting heard.

The free litter picking kits, which include gloves and yellow vests, are available at dedicated hubs around the city.

Council officer Martin Lundie told the Springburn and Robroyston Area Partnership yesterday that the neighbourhood enforcement improvement service had launched the new hubs - with one based at Springburn Academy.

Mr Lundie said: “That enables people to go in and borrow litter pickers and equipment they need to do clean ups in their communities.

“There was an arrangement in the past when staff from head office would have to be contacted. It would take a bit of time and staff would then deliver those kits.”

But the meeting heard from one resident that volunteers carrying out litter picking would no longer be covered by insurance.

Pointing out how litter picks had been very successful in Robroyston, Carole Phillip, of Robroyston community council, said: “It is quite disappointing. We are going out and giving up our time at our own risk, which is not fair on residents any more.”

Mr Lundie said he would find out more details about the concern.
