Glasgow Labour appoint new food champion for city in shake-up

A food champion for Glasgow is among the new roles created by the city's Labour group as part of a reshuffle.

Glasgow's Labour leader for the council George Redmond said the role would be crucial as the city now has 'more foodbanks than McDonald's', as he announced a shake-up of the opposition administration with a new shadow treasurer also appointed.

Former provost Philip Braat has been removed as treasurer and replaced by councillor Jill Brown - with a number of new roles created.

It comes after councillor Braat lost out in a leadership contest vote against councillor Redmond last month. See the full list of roles below.

The reorganisation sees a number of new faces entering the cabinet following the initial appointments last year after Labour made gains in the council election.

Councillor Robert Mooney has been selected to act as disabilities champion while councillor Sharon Greer steps up to be a food champion.

Councillor Eunis Jassemi is the newly appointed group policy development coordinator with councillor Jill Pidgeon having responsibility for communities.

Councillor Redmond said: "We were always going to do a refresh. It is about making sure the 16 new councillors get the opportunity to settle in.

"Our first responsibility is to the people who elected us - we should never forget this."

Commenting on the creation of new spokesperson roles, councillor Redmond said: "The food champion is really critical. People have been talking about heating or eating in the last year. There are more foodbanks in Glasgow than McDonald's. Scotland is one of the most modern countries in the world but we have people who can't feed themselves. People are going to foodbanks to feed their kids - it is not right."

He said the disabilities champion is important as people are being impacted by issues with road and pavement infrastructure as well as struggling to get access to essential services including in the NHS.

Councillor Redmond added: "The team I have put together represents a balance of experience and strong fresh talent from our diverse Glasgow Labour group."

The Calton politician said he looks forward to working with the new leadership team to hold the SNP minority administration to account and "present Glasgow Labour's bold, progressive alternative that puts Glasgow first."

The majority of Labour politicians have continued holding positions in the cabinet apart from councillors Braat and Jim Kavanagh.
