Glasgow killer who murdered mum then stayed with body for five days dies in prison

A man who stabbed his girlfriend to death has died while serving life behind bars.

The Scottish Prison Service confirmed that Andrew McKinlay passed away at HMP Shotts, seven years into his sentence for the horrific murder of Josephine Steele at her Glasgow home.

The mum-of-three was killed at the flat in Dobbies Lone by the 47-year-old in October 2013, he then stayed with her body for five days.

He bought air freshener and bleach to cover the smell, then moved in with a friend leaving Josephine's body to remain undiscovered for weeks.

When he was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh McKinlay, who was 39 at the time, was told he must serve a minimum of 15 years in prison.

The couple had been in a short relationship before the McKinlay carried out the terrifying attack on trusting Josephine.

After her death he moved her body to the bathroom and told lies to family and friends.

At his sentencing hearing Judge Kenneth Maciver told him: "Although it was a short relationship, she loved and trusted you and she was entitled to feel safe and secure in her own home.

Josephine Steele was only 45 when she was killed by Andrew McKinlay (Police Scotland)

"We do not know what happened, but it is clear that you attacked her in a drug and drink fuelled rage. The attack with a weapon was relentless.

"There were five penetrative stab wounds, several other cuts and evidence of defensive wounds. It was a sustained attack. There is no escaping these facts, just as there was no escape for her from your attack."

The cause of McKinlay's death on July 30 has not been made public, but a Fatal Accident Inquiry into his death will be held in due course.
