Glasgow Kelvingrove Museum fire anger as youths pose for pictures next to blaze

Locals have hit out at youths who 'posed for photos' in front of a bush fire outside the Kelvingrove Art Gallery.

The group were spotted taking pictures of the small blaze in the hedges outside the museum yesterday evening as an eyewitness claimed one even performed a kickflip on his skateboard in front of it as his pal filmed.

The eyewitness, who wishes to remain anonymous, said she was having dinner at a pub across the road when they noticed the rising flames and immediately called the fire service.

She said: "It went up really quickly. All the kids nearby did was take photos in front of it while it was expanding rapidly. One lad did a kick flip on his skateboard and got his mate to film it in front of the fire. It was ridiculous.

"I was disappointed in how the kids reacted to the situation. It didn't appear they phoned the fire service. They clearly thought it was funny."

The local said the fire service arrived within minutes after they called but that the damage could have been much worse.

She added: "I hope that young people look at this and realise how irresponsible that is and learn from it. People need to use their common sense.

"We’ve already lost important areas of Glasgow to fire, like the Art School. I don’t think people realise how quick fire spreads and it's quite scary.

"I don’t know if the fire was intentional but I think the people nearby should’ve prioritised phoning emergency services rather than getting photos for their Instagram. It could have been catastrophic."

A spokeswoman for Scottish Fire and Rescue said: "We received a report of a bush fire outside Kelvingrove Art Gallery at around 6:30pm on Monday April 11. An appliance was sent out to extinguish it."
