Glasgow Indiana Jones filming: City 'bags' first new subway station in 125 years thanks to shoot

Glasgow's subway system, although proper teensy, is much loved by those of us who use it to get shoogled from A to B under the streets of the city in next to no time.

Proud as we are of being home to the world's third-oldest underground metro system, it still finds itself as the butt of jokes since it also holds the (unwanted) title of being the only one on the planet never to have been expanded since opening in 1896.

That however looks to have just changed thanks to the arrival of film crews working on Hollywood blockbuster Indian Jones 5, the fifth film in the beloved franchise starring Harrison Ford.

The city centre is looking pretty spectacular as it is transformed into 1960s New York - complete with American flags and vintage style shop fronts - prior to the cameras rolling in the very near future.

And they've even gone as far as to create an authentic-looking Big Apple subway entrance slap bang on Renfield Street - which looks to have been rechristened as 59th Street in New York judging by the signage.

The subway sign reads: "59th Street New York Transit System IRT Division Uptown to the Bronx Downtown to Fulton Street", and we guess it refers to Fulton Street in Manhattan rather than Temple."

Plenty of Glaswegians have taken to Twitter to share the photo of the fake subway entrance while joking that we have now got ourselves a new station - finally.

One person tweeted: "The first extension to Glasgow’s Subway system in its 127-year history was nothing if not ambitious…"

Another who spotted it wrote: "59th Street Subway' on the Indiana Jones set in Glasgow city centre today. We were told that the 'set' is supposed to be New York City in 1969. Looks so good.

The new film is predicted to be set in 1969 around the time of the moon landing and see Indiana Jones go head to head with a Nazi scientist enlisted into NASA by the US government to work on the Moon landing initiative, played by Mads Mikkelsen.

Here's hoping we get a look at Harrison Ford in action soon!
