Glasgow independence march organisers issue reminder to 'dress appropriately' as strong winds hit

The organisers of today's march for Scottish independence in Glasgow have reminded people taking part to 'dress appropriately'.

It comes on the back of the cancellation of the accompanying rally due to heavy rain and gale force winds.

As reported by Glasgow Live, All Under One Banner (AUOB) - a group set up "to raise the profile of the need of an independent Scotland" in 2014 - have been calling for independence supporters to meet on the streets this weekend, with organisers expecting as many as 100,000 people to attend.

But earlier this week they were forced to axe the because of health and safety concerns over expected high winds.

The march through Glasgow city centre will still go ahead, with the team leading proceedings sending out the reminder this morning.

They say, via the organisations Facebook page: "Good morning people!

"Only a few hours until today's historic March for Independence, the weather is atmospheric as our Gael force is summoned into action.

"Please make sure you wear appropriate clothing."

Weather warnings for rain remain in place across the UK today as the country faces persistent and heavy bouts.

Forecasters from the Met Office say people should prepare for the possibility of flooding, cancellations to train and bus services and other disruption as a result.

Although not directly affected by the yellow alerts, Glaswegians are still set to be in for a torrid time until at least early evening, with the most recent Met Office prediction for the area stating: "Cloudy for much of the day with further rain, most persistent and heaviest across Argyll. Winds turn more southwesterly and ease through the day with the rain clearing later."

Meanwhile Police Scotland have issued a warning over today's march, saying people who go into the city centre and west end today should expect "significant disruption" with a number of temporary road closures set to spell traffic delays.

Drivers are also being encouraged to use public transport.

Roads affected will be Kelvin Way, Gibson Street, Eldon Street, Woodlands Road, Sauchiehall Street, Pitt Street, Blythswood Square, West George Street, Renfield Street, Union Street, Jamaica Street, Clyde Street and the Saltmarket.

A statement from Glasgow City Council's Traffic Control and Management (TRAFFCOM) team reads: "Due to a parade on Saturday 11 January 2020, there will be a number of roads restricted between the times of 8am until approximately 5pm.

"Roads will be restricted between Kelvin Way and Glasgow Green.

"Police have confirmed Transport Scotland will be closing a number of off ramps from the M8 and gantries will display closures / restrictions."

The event comes in the wake of the December general election, which saw the SNP win winning 48 of 59 available seats in Scotland.
