Glasgow House of Fraser building 'collapsing' amid water damage and mould claim

Images being shared show what appears to be the shocking state of parts of the iconic House of Fraser building on Buchanan Street.

A whistleblower told the Scottish Daily Express recently the A listed shop has 'been left to rot', claiming billionaire House of Fraser bosses are failing to carry out all repairs at the landmark.

It's subsequently been reported that water damage appears to have gotten worse, with parts of ceilings and walls collapsing within metres of expensive designer goods.

In photos circulated online, buckets and bins appear to be being used to stop water pouring from holes in internal ceilings and there are signs of damp within the Glasgow city centre store. The Scottish Daily Express have previously reported on mushrooms growing in carpets due to the issues.

They also say a ceiling collapsed beside designer sunglasses, with a reporter informed by a member of staff the issue had been ongoing for over four months, before eventually collapsing last week, prompting fears for the safety of the building.

Another image appears to show obvious water damage to other floors in the building.

A staff member speaking about the state of the building last year claims: "It's insane they aren't dealing with the issues. The place is collapsing and has white mould that has been left to rot and fester.

"The roof on the fourth floor is noticeably falling and the men's toilet is blocked off because the ceiling has collapsed. They've painted over where it's leaking into the third floor.

"The toilet on level two at lingerie is closed off because that's where the leak that's causing the mushrooms is coming from.

"Just walk looking up and you'll find so many damp patches."

Bought by controversial Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley in 2018, the 350,000 square feet shop was opened as the very first House of Fraser department store in 1849 under the name Arthur and Fraser.

It is currently an A-listed protected building, which according to Historic Scotland, means that the building is considered of "national or international architectural or historical importance."

Ashley bought the building for £95million from the Strathclyde Pension Fund, administered by Glasgow City Council, and the deal was completed in January 2020.

He had previously bought the House of Fraser brand for £90m after it entered administration, owing creditors more than £1 billion.

Historic Scotland, which looks after listed buildings in Scotland and House of Fraser, have been contacted for comment.

A Frasers Group spokesperson commented; “In light of recent reports we want to emphasise that the safety and wellbeing of our staff and customers is our priority. Our buildings follow regular maintenance reporting, and at the time of this statement, 45 Buchanan Street, has been investigated to ensure there is no risk to our staff or our customers. This site complies with all legal requirements, and we have on the ground professionals ensuring any appropriate repairs are completed efficiently.

"We recognise the 350,000 sq. ft building needs improvements and we have been working hard since acquiring the business to action these. Unfortunately, the store had seen little to no investment from the previous owners for many years.”
