Hotel bookings in Glasgow have reached their highest levels since the start of the pandemic, according to new data.
SiteMinder’s World Hotel Index reports that hotels reservations in the city have reached 96.5% of 2019 levels, as of August 11.
The data puts Glasgow well ahead of major cities such as London, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, Berlin, Amsterdam and Vienna.
A number of reasons are behind the surge, namely the rise in staycations, domestic tourism and, later in the year, people travelling to the city for COP26.
The data is sourced from the company’s open hotel commerce platform, used by 35,000 hotels and connected to more than 400 hotel booking channels globally.
Mr Bishop of SiteMinder added: “Glasgow’s encouraging hotel booking figures show the city is poised to benefit from a sustained recovery of UK tourism, with domestic travellers desperate to make up for lost time, especially in light of the ongoing rollout of the UK’s vaccination programme.
"In time, we expect this to be complemented by a steady increase of international tourists, which is further positive news for Glasgow’s hoteliers”.
“This is in line with the results of SiteMinder’s Changing Traveller Report 2021: UK Edition , which found that almost two-in-three UK travellers plan to travel either more (26%) or the same amount (35%) as before the pandemic.
"While challenges remain, we can finally see light at the end of the tunnel for UK hoteliers, who should continue to be diligent about ensuring their business is in the best position to reap the rewards of this and not be left behind, looking to technology as a critical enabler.”
