Glasgow hospitals treat 49 drunks for booze related injuries and illnesses in single weekend

Glaswegians are being urged to control the amount of alcohol they consume after hospitals in the city were inundated with drunk emergency patients at the weekend.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde confirmed to Glasgow Live that 49 people attended A&E wards with injuries or illnesses related to alcohol over the bank holiday weekend.

The figures come as the city's frontline health workers deal with the huge additional pressures caused by the ongoing pandemic - with nearly 500 people in hospitals as of last night with confirmed or suspected coronavirus, 29 of whom were in intensive care.

A statement by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said: "We continue to advise the public to follow public health guidance for alcohol consumption, as we all manage this unprecedented disruption to our daily lives.

"Over the past weekend, there were 49 emergency attendances to our hospitals that were related to alcohol.

"We recommend everyone follow the Chief Medical Officer’s advice which is to not drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis".

The figures come weeks after Glasgow Live reported how alcohol licensing restrictions could be relaxed in Scotland, after discussions took place within the Scottish Parliament.

The relaxation in the laws would allow customers taking advantage of early supermarket opening hours to buy alcohol - which cannot be purchased in shops prior to 10am.
