Glasgow homeless charity worker's car attacked with dog dirt while feeding city’s hungry

A Glasgow based homeless charity reported an incident over the weekend, when one of their volunteers had their car vandalised with dog dirt while they worked at the soup kitchen.

The incident took place on the evening of September 23, when the team were operating their services near Central Station on Argyle Street. At the time, almost 200 people were queuing to receive a hot meal when an unknown man picked up the animal waste and vandalised the car with it.

He then quickly left the scene, after he had defaced the car of a 72-year-old volunteer at the project.

Homeless Project Scotland posted an update to their Facebook account, writing: “One of our volunteers' cars was attacked with dog dirt this evening while the soup kitchen was serving our most vulnerable, there was a man putting dog dirt over the car of one of our workers - shocking.

“People give up time to come and help others and this happens. CCTV will be posted soon to identify this person. Police Scotland arrived and said no crime was committed, we are baffled at this.”

Colin McInnes, chairman and co-founder of Homeless Project Scotland, told Glasgow Live: “We were serving over 1000 hot meals to 200 homeless and vulnerable people at the time of the attack on the car.

“We don’t know who did it, but the man was caught on CCTV scooping up the dirt and putting it all over the car. We spoke to the police and they said no crime was committed.

“If people intimidate and scare volunteers, then they won’t come back and if they don’t come back we have no one to serve food to our most vulnerable. We’ve seen a rise in verbal attacks to volunteers, alongside an increase in the numbers of people using our service.

“We’ve had people jumping on our van roofs before, but nothing as extreme as this. It’s terrible that our volunteers are made to stand on one of Scotland’s most dangerous streets, apparently, and be put at risk in this way.

“It’s left volunteers very upset and causes a ripple throughout the team.”

At the moment, it’s believed that the incident was carried out at random - though analysis of the CCTV may help identify the culprit.
