Glasgow HMP Barlinnie prisoner death probe after inmate dies

A Fatal Accident Inquiry is to be held after a prisoner died at HMP Barlinnie.

David Sutherland, 42, passed away at the prison in Riddrie area of Glasgow on Tuesday January 11.

Mr Sutherland had previously been convicted at Glasgow & Strathkelvin Sheriff Court in 2021.

The Scottish Prison Service have advised Police Scotland about the death and the matter has been reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

A statement from the Scottish Prison Service said: "David Sutherland, 42, a prisoner from HMP Barlinnie has died on 11 January 2022. Mr Sutherland was convicted at Glasgow & Strathkelvin Sheriff Court in 2021.

"Police Scotland have been advised and the matter reported to the Procurator Fiscal. A Fatal Accident Inquiry will be held in due course."
