Glasgow heatwave update for Platinum Jubilee as Met Office issues forecast

Scotland is set to experience a pleasant weekend across the Platinum Jubilee bank holiday, with temperatures forecast to increase.

According to the Met Office, temperatures will surge above typical June values, and the weather is expected to be bright and dry throughout the four-day weekend.

As reported by the Daily Record, average temperatures in June are between 15 degrees Celsius and 17C, and the mercury may hit as high as the low-to-mid twenties — but a fully fledged heatwave is not expected.

The forecaster has stated that detailed information about the weather for the Jubilee Weekend from June 2 to June 5 will be available closer to the time.

However, a heatwave — which is defined as at least three consecutive days of scorching hot temperatures — is not looking likely.

The Met Office stated: “We’re still some two weeks away from the Jubilee Weekend, but the long-range outlook shows a trend for some possible warm weather in southern areas, and closer to average temperatures further north.”

Currently available data has suggested that temperatures may be slightly higher in southern and western areas.

Regardless of the exact temperatures, Scots across the country are likely to be able to enjoy the majority holiday in dry and pleasant weather — though there may be sporadic appearances of rain across the four days.

The remainder of this week will see unsettled weather throughout much of the UK, with rain and strong winds forecast at some point in most regions.

The jet stream, which plays a large role when it comes to the weather across the UK, is expected to grow in strength throughout the week.

This will bring low pressure in from the west and result in wind and rain for large parts of the UK — though there will still be some dry spells.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Adam Thornhill said: “The jet stream is strengthening through the week and as a result will be the driving force behind low pressure moving in off the Atlantic and bringing periods of rain and wind for most this week.

“The strongest winds will be in the northwest and although most areas of the UK will see some rain in the week, the highest accumulations are expected in western areas, with the southeast most likely to escape any rain. Weather of this nature isn’t unusual in a UK spring, as changes in the jet stream frequently bring interludes of unsettled weather.”

Glasgow is expected to see a mix of bright skies and heavy showers until Friday, after which the weather is expected to turn drier for the weekend.
