Glasgow health board failed to report death of child cancer patient linked to dirty water at hospital

A health board was criticised for not reporting to the Crown Office the death of a girl linked to dirty water.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde has yet to contact the procurator fiscal to report Milly Main ’s death – despite alleged links to an infection from contaminated water at the Royal Hospital for Children (RHC).

Crown Office protocols say any death should be reported by medics if it raises public safety issues.

Milly, 10, died on August 31, 2017, having contracted stenotrophomonas.

A whistleblower said the bacteria had been in water at the RHC and a 2018 report said the bacteria was associated with more than a dozen water-related infections in children.

Milly’s mum Kimberley Darroch said she was “very surprised” that the death had not been reported.

She added “I have no faith in this health board and its leadership.”

An NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde spokesman said: “The procurator fiscal sets out clear advice to medical practitioners on the circumstances when a death should be reported and these were followed.”
