Glasgow Harbour development: £100m plans to rejuvenate River Clyde waterfront move forward

Renewed planning consent is being sought for a major new £100m retail and leisure development on former dock and shipyard land on the banks of the River Clyde.

Glasgow Harbour Lifestyle Outlet, next to the Riverside Museum, will house restaurants, cafes, a 200-bedroom hotel, 12-screen cinema, casino, and a waterfront promenade built on land at Castlebank Quay, Pointhouse Quay and Yorkhill Quay - with developers hoping that it will become Scotland's ‘premium’ outlet.

If approved, it will comprise of 193,500 sq ft of retail space and 65,000 sq ft of food and beverage and nearly 100,000 sq ft of leisure space, with 120 shops, a large ‘family leisure’ unit and a gym.

There will also be a footbridge over the River Kelvin, riverside walkways, cycle paths and landscaped terraces, plus ‘arrival’ squares, boulevard and plaza spaces.

A statement from developers says the proposal would "deliver a new waterfront destination on the River Clyde along with thousands of associated retail and construction jobs, revitalising a key gap site and making Glasgow a city on the river not by the river".

The outlet also promises "VIP and concierge shopping services and will work with agencies, airports and airlines to promote Glasgow to the national and international market", with retail units that will be “largely arranged around a network of internal streets and spaces, one of these being a ‘covered street’".

Planning permission was originally granted in 2008 to rejuvenate the 74-acre site, with the new plans submitted to Glasgow City Council last month.

The mixed-use development, now with the council's planning services, is set to be made up of six blocks, with more than 1,300 parking spaces provided.
