Glasgow Gran reveals love story behind 66 year old telegram discovered by granddaughter

A Glasgow Gran has told of the love story behind a 66 year old telegram discovered by her granddaughter.

Breda Black was blown away by the adorable piece of nostalgia that brought dating back to basics as she took a trip down memory lane with her granny Lily Black.

The 23-year-old nursery teacher was thrilled to see it was from her grandad James Morris Black, known as Jim, asking Lily to meet him in Glasgow city centre back in 1954.

Now, at 90-years-old, Lily has revealed the full love story behind the telegram and how dating was when she was younger.

Time-travelling back to 1952, Lily set the scene at the Plaza ballroom in Glasgow as she told her youngest granddaughter how she was looking for love.

Going twice a week on the hunt for ‘the best dancer’, Lily was surprised when a man ‘with two left feet’ managed to sweep her off hers.

The love at first jive moment set the foundation for a 51 year long marriage that brought them four kids, five grandkids, and five great grandchildren.

Jim had been on holiday to Dublin when he sent her the adorable telegram and proposed to Lily not long after getting back.

She said: “My Gran met my Grandad in 1952 and they dated till 1954 when they got married.

“The telegram was sent in 1954 before they got engaged when grandpa was on holiday in Dublin.

“He had wanted to meet her when he came, they got married later that year.

“She used to always go and look for the best dancer but said this man came up with two left feet and that was it.

“Afterwards they went upstairs for a coffee and he asked to see her the next day and they were together ever since.

"I just wanted to share it because it opened my eyes to how different dating is now."

Jim and Lily settled down living in Carntyne, Glasgow before he sadly passed away in 2005 from complications with his diabetes.

Lily said: “I might not have got a good dancer, but I got a great husband.”
