Glasgow GP who won £500k on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire confirms how he will spend winnings

A retired Glasgow GP has confirmed how he plans to spend the £500,000 he won during last night's nail-biting episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.

Glasgow viewers were gripped to the edge of their seats watching Andrew Townsley come agonizingly close to winning the £1 million top prize on the show.

With the 53-year-old opting to take the £500,000 after being asked a difficult final question concerning the history of motor sport by host Jeremy Clarkson.

Speaking to ITV's This Morning, the Glasgow Uni graduate said: "Once the world recovers, I can have some thoughts about. But, with the MS, I am restricted and stuck in the house until this time next year at the earliest.

"It's difficult to tell (when asked if his illness had progressed since the episode's filming in December of last year).

"Some people with MS have relapses where they get much worse. I have progressive MS so they are small deteriorations over time. I have been living with this for over 20 years and gone from a rugby player to someone who is quite restricted.

"As I said to Jeremy, we'd love to visit Niagara Falls. It's also another chance to see some relatives in Australia and take in some cricket when we are there."

And Andrew, who worked at Newhills Medical Practice in Easterhouse, also justified his decision not to play the final question.

"Hindsight is a lovely thing but in my own mind I had a choice between two, and fate as it happens or fate as it usually happens to me is you choose one and the other one is the answer.

"TT is quite famous for being very well established, it's quite an old race, but I just felt that the security that this win gives me I couldn't take a £400,000 bet", he said.

Regardless, you done us proud Andrew!
