Glasgow gets ready to reopen as shopping mecca for thousands

High street retailers in Glasgow will reopen their doors to the public this coming Monday (June 29) with Scotland now in phase two of the route map out of lockdown.

Shopping centres such as Buchanan Galleries will remain shut however as the shops within them do not have outdoor entrances and exits.

Glasgow Live paid a visit to Sauchiehall Street and Buchanan Street to have a look at what preparations are underway to ensure they can operate with two-metre social distancing measures in place to protect staff and customers.

Although both streets are very quiet in comparison to pre-lockdown, they do seem busier than they were weeks ago, thanks to the likes of Greggs, Marks & Spencer, T.J. Hughes, Poundland, Savers and some gift shops being open for business.

Shoppers Anne Cunningham and Alicia Docherty took advantage of the quiet streets to pick up some things from Marks & Spencers.

Anne, who is a support worker, told Glasgow Live: "I won't be queueing up to visit Primark once it opens. I think I'll wait till it dies down."

While Alicia, who works in food manufacturing, said: "I won't be queueing up either. There's nothing I need that I'm that desperate to get by queuing up for."

Primark will no doubt welcome large queues when it reopens next week, and staff are busy inside preparing the store to be ready - with hand sanitiser stations at the entrance, large blue coloured floor markings on the floor areas dotted throughout and signs on the clothes racks themselves reminding the need to socially distance.

Bar owner Jackie, who runs places such as The Social on Royal Exchange Square, told Glasgow Live she won't be in any hurry to queue to get into stores next week.

"I not be rushing back in or anything. I don't need anything. I'll probably come back in to do my nosey. I want to get back to work."

While shopper Angela, who was shopping on Sauchiehall Street with friend Donna, said: "We need a few things but we won't be standing in big queues when the likes of Primark opens again."

And the pair have noticed that things do seem to picking up a little now that some smaller retail stores have reopened in the past while.

"As the weeks have gone on town does seem to be getting busier and busier", added Donna.

Other retailers such as Nike and the T.M Lewin store on Buchanan Street also looked to be busy in preparations for reopening next week.

Although some shoppers might be put off by the fact that you won't be able to try any clothes on in fitting rooms before making a purchase.

Another Buchanan Street shopper, who wished to remain nameless, told Glasgow Live: "I'm kind of wary, I heard that you won't be able to try clothes on so I won't be in any rush to head back in to town to buy some next week."
